MELVINDALE — The city’s motto is the “Little city with a big heart.” That heart has never been larger following support shown by residents in the past three weeks.

Over the course of three weeks, more than a dozen fundraisers were held across the city to help Rick and Reina Smith, and their son, Travis, raise more than $40,000 to attend the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where their daughter, Jessica Smith, will compete in all three short-track speed skating events.
